The Forest Stream is a live audio transmission from a bark beetle-infested site in the Thuringian Forest (close to Ilmenau) and is part of the long-term research project ‘The Forest Echoes Back‘.
A ‘stream-box’ installed on-site transmits the soundscape of the forest so that possibly anyone, anywhere, can tune into the sounds of environmental collapse and change in the forest. Sometimes, the live audio stream is affected by bad weather, empty batteries, used data, other technical hick-ups or curious creatures, but most of the time, you can listen to the stream 24/7.
The ‘stream-box’ was built with Soundcamp, a London-based arts cooperative that works on transmission ecologies, from DIY broadcasting devices to public sound and radio projects. The ‘forest-stream’ is hosted on the Locus Sonus server, a worldwide network of ‘open microphones’ that permanently stream local soundscapes to a dedicated server.
